Pinyin

Pinyin, more formally Hanyu pinyin, is the most common Standard Mandarin romanization system in use. Hanyu means the Chinese language, and pinyin means "spell sound", or the spelling of the sound. It is used to teach Chinese schoolchildren and foreign learners the standard pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese, to spell Chinese names in foreign publications. It has also become a useful tool for entering Chinese language text into computers.

Chinese character

A Chinese character, also known as a Hanzi (汉字;  pinyin: Hànzì), is a logogram used in writing Chinese (hanzi). The number of Chinese characters contained in the Kangxi dictionary is approximately 47,035. Studies carried out in China have shown that full literacy in the Chinese language requires a knowledge of only between three and four thousand characters.
